Mastery Journey #2

I have a hard time putting it together. Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing has been a fog on a week that has infuriated me. I was scrolling Instagram and EA Sports posted about the women’s players’ ratings in the upcoming release of FIFA 21. I made the mistake of reading the comments, and they made my blood boil. “99 in kitchen skills.” “Who cares.” “99 in sandwich making.” These were among many quotes by men disparaging the inclusion of women in the game. I had a lengthy rant I was going to post about, but I’m subdued because of the Notorious RBG. Tonight, she is my inspiration. I could have picked any of her memorable quotes, but I am using this particular one, because it shows her humility and grace in such an eloquent way.
I look forward to the day we have real equality for everyone, and we move beyond the fights over fundamental human rights.

An Inspirational Video

An Inspirational Video

Inspiration comes in many forms. You may witness someone’s success, have a personal failure, or just be watching a video and say, “wow, I need to be a part of that.” For me, the third scenario is what happened.

Can Soccer Change the World?

Over the last few years, I have developed a true fandom for Major League Soccer. It started with FIFA 18, a simulation video game, and a game mode called The Journey. As part of the character’s journey, he ends up in Los Angeles playing for the Galaxy. The game started to get me thinking about soccer and how I played it as a kid, but never watched it because you really couldn’t find it on tv. I was unemployed during the summer of 2018 because I was still recovering from my illness. As a result, I had plenty of time to watch the world cup, even though the US, embarrassingly, didn’t qualify. It was there I first saw the highlight of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s incredible first MLS goal. If you haven’t seen it, you have to (Don’t worry, I will link it at the end of the blog). A passion was ignited, and I haven’t looked back.

The Seattle Sounders

Major League Soccer’s YouTube page has a series called The Movement. I was scrolling my suggested videos, and the episode, Can Soccer Change the World, appeared. I started watching it, and I was blown away. The Sounders, as an organization, are, in my opinion, the definition of community involvement. They work to sustain the local environment, promote community inclusion, and make a profit is inspirational. It was on full display in this video. (MLS, 2019) An earlier video in the series talks about how the Sounders and soccer, in general, thrive in Seattle. It’s also worth viewing. My ultimate goal is to run my own organization, and the Sounders are the model I hope to aspire too.
